The historic town of Paraty celebrates Holy Week
Paraty is a traditionally Catholic city, the celebration traditions of Easter in Paraty date back to the XVII century. You can watch the Biblical scenes made with sawdust and grains, the liturgies and the traditional music. Procissão do Fogaréu and the Passion of the Christ are the the highlights of Easter celebration in Paraty. It is a procession were the local people walk through the streets with torches, street lights off, and sound jingle bells creating a unique atmosphere.
Since Easter is a movable holiday (it starts the Thursday following the Holy Trinity Sunday, which, in turn, is the Sunday following Pentecost Sunday), the dates for Easter change every year. We advice you to always confirm the current dates on our yearly Paraty Events Calendar.
